Query Decomposition

Category: AI Search & Retrieval

Definition

Query Decomposition is the process of breaking a complex search query or question into smaller, more specific sub-queries that can be answered or retrieved separately.

AI systems can use query decomposition to understand multi-part questions and gather information from multiple sources before producing a final answer.

Why It Matters

Many real-world questions cannot be answered effectively with a single search.

A complex query may contain several information needs. By breaking it down, an AI system can retrieve more targeted information for each part of the question.

This is particularly important for AI search, RAG systems, and agentic search.

Example

A user asks:

“What are the best CRM platforms for a small business, how much do they cost, and which ones integrate with Shopify?”

An AI system might decompose this into several searches:

  1. What CRM platforms are suitable for small businesses?
  2. What are their current pricing plans?
  3. Which CRM platforms integrate with Shopify?
  4. Which options best satisfy all three requirements?

The system can then combine the retrieved information into one answer.

Query Decomposition vs. Query Expansion

These concepts are related but different.

Query expansion adds related terms or concepts to a query to improve retrieval.

Query decomposition breaks one complex query into multiple smaller queries.

For example:

Expansion:
“AI visibility” → “AI search, GEO, AEO, generative search, AI SEO”

Decomposition:
“What are the best GEO agencies in Europe and what services do they offer?” →
“What are the best GEO agencies?” + “Which are based in Europe?” + “What services do they offer?”

Why Query Decomposition Matters for AI Visibility

AI systems may not treat a complex user question as a single search.

They can break the question into multiple information needs and retrieve different sources for each one.

For brands, this means visibility can depend on being discoverable across multiple related sub-queries, not just one primary keyword or phrase.
