Context Window

Category: AI Search & Retrieval

Definition

A Context Window is the amount of information an AI model can process and consider at one time when generating a response.

The context may include the user’s question, previous conversation, retrieved documents, instructions, and other information supplied to the model.

Context windows are typically measured in tokens, rather than simply in words or characters.

Why It Matters

AI systems often retrieve external information before generating an answer. That information needs to fit within the model’s available context.

If too much information is retrieved, the system may need to:

  • Select only the most relevant passages
  • Remove redundant information
  • Summarize content
  • Prioritize certain sources
  • Break processing into multiple steps

This makes context management an important part of AI search and RAG systems.

Example

A user asks:

“What are the cancellation terms for this software plan?”

A RAG system might retrieve several documents containing pricing, billing, cancellation, and account information.

Instead of sending every document to the language model, the system may select the most relevant passages and place them inside the model’s context window.

Context Window vs. Knowledge

A context window is not the same as the AI model’s knowledge.

A model may have learned information during training, but its context window contains the information currently available to it during a particular interaction.

Retrieved documents can therefore provide additional, task-specific context.

Why Context Windows Matter for AI Visibility

When AI systems retrieve information about a brand or topic, only a portion of the available information may ultimately be included in the model’s context.

This makes clear, focused, and easily retrievable content valuable. Information that directly addresses a query is more likely to be useful when the system has limited space to work with.
