Passage Retrieval

Category: AI Search & Retrieval

Definition

Passage Retrieval is the process of finding a specific section, paragraph, or passage within a larger document that is relevant to a user’s query.

Instead of retrieving an entire webpage or document, a retrieval system can identify the smaller section that most directly answers the question.

Why It Matters

Large documents can contain information about many different topics.

Retrieving only the relevant passage can:

  • Reduce unnecessary information
  • Improve retrieval precision
  • Give an AI model more focused context
  • Reduce the amount of text that needs to be processed
  • Help AI systems answer specific questions more accurately

Passage retrieval is particularly important in RAG and AI question-answering systems.

Example

A 10,000-word software documentation page covers installation, pricing, security, integrations, and troubleshooting.

A user asks:

“How do I reset my password?”

Instead of retrieving the entire documentation page, the system may retrieve the specific password-reset section.

The AI model can then use that passage to formulate the answer.

Passage Retrieval vs. Document Retrieval

Document Retrieval finds an entire document that is relevant to a query.

Passage Retrieval goes one step further by finding the most relevant section within that document.

For example:

Document Retrieval:
“Find the relevant help article.”

Passage Retrieval:
“Find the specific paragraph in that article that explains the password-reset process.”

Connection to Chunking

Passage retrieval often relies on content being divided into smaller sections through chunking.

A simplified process can look like:

Document → Chunking → Indexing → Query → Passage Retrieval → Relevant Context → AI Answer

The quality and structure of those passages can therefore influence retrieval.

Why Passage Retrieval Matters for AI Visibility

A page does not necessarily need to be entirely about a user’s question for part of it to become useful to an AI system.

A well-structured page can contain multiple focused passages that answer different questions.

Clear headings, concise explanations, and self-contained sections can therefore make information easier to retrieve and potentially use in AI-generated answers.

In Simple Terms

Passage Retrieval means finding the specific section of a document that best answers a user’s question, rather than retrieving the entire document.
